What We Offer Children and Youth
Children and Youth are a vital part of our Community!
We welcome them with open arms and guide them with loving hands.
Our Children and Youth Religious Education (CYRE) program offers Sunday morning classes, opportunities to share in worship, and fun events throughout the year. We serve children from preschool through high school, enabling them to be courageous partners in working for change, to build Unitarian Universalist (UU) identity, and to create lasting relationships. As a UU congregation, our lessons and activities are aligned with the UU Core Values, with Love at the center of all we do. Questions or need more information? Contact Paula Gribble, Director of Lifespan Religious Education, at paula@uuccharlotte.org.
Registration
All Children and Youth must be registered for CYRE, so that we have the best information and can provide a safe environment: 2024-25 CYRE Registration. This includes returning families and new families, both member and non-member. There is no fee.
Sunday Mornings
- Multigenerational Worship – All ages attend the full service, curated for all to engage.
- First 15 Days – Children and Youth attend the first 15 minutes of the service, which includes a message/story, and then go to class.
- Community Sundays – All Ages attend a brief service, and then choose from a variety of activities/sessions available.
- Class Days – Children and Youth begin on the playground or in classroom, and then stay in class.
Age Cohorts
- Nursery (ages 6 months – 3 years)
- Spirit Play (ages 4 – 1st Grade)
- Elementary (grades 2 – 4)
- Jr. Youth (grades 5 – 7)

Other Ways to Engage
- Holidays – Events such as our Halloween Festival, Winter Holiday Party, Big Bang Holiday, or Easter Festival
- Church-wide Events/Community Building Events – Such as Plant Swaps, Game Nights, and more
- Mountain CONferences – Held at The Mountain Retreat and Learning Center, these weekend Cons are offered each fall and spring. Parents of children planning to attend a Mountain Con are required to attend an orientation session, held in the fall. We encourage parents to volunteer as trip “advisors.”
- Our Whole Lives (OWL) – Our comprehensive sexuality education program for all ages. Children and Youth program grades are K-2, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. We try to offer 1-2 sessions each year. Used across the country in Unitarian Universalist and United Church of Christ congregations, this lifespan sexuality education curriculum is based on four primary goals:
- To provide accurate, developmentally appropriate information
- To increase self-esteem and understand relationships with and responsibilities toward others
- To develop interpersonal skills, including communication, decision-making and problem-solving
- To teach responsibility for personal health and safety
- Friday Family Fun Nights (F3N) – On the second Friday of each month, children and their parents and caregivers gather for a meal together, followed by age-separated family activities. Often, we are at UUCC but sometimes we do activities offsite.
