Many people have long lamented the constant and frantic pace of life in the United States. Wistfully, we wish for things like adequate bereavement and parental leave. Valiantly, we struggle to keep our work and family life balanced and are admonished to leave more time for self-care. In an age when technology leaves few places unreachable by wifi or cellular service, everything can be presented as urgent. Nicole Hersey, the Nap Bishop, calls us to consider that true rest is more than simply taking a nap, that human beings do not exist simply to produce, and that grind culture is harming us all. The usual solutions presented put the responsibility on the individual, when, in fact, the way out of this figurative hamster wheel may just lie in our communities. Bass soloist George Washington III sings selections by Vaughan Williams with John Herrick accompanying on piano.
